Why Prepare Your Server?

Preparing your server before bringing it to the data center saves time and ensures a smooth installation process. By installing the operating system and configuring IPMI in advance, you can minimize the time needed on-site and get your server up and running faster.

Step-by-Step Preparation Guide

1

Install the Operating System

Install your preferred operating system (Linux, Windows Server, etc.) on your server before shipping it or bringing it to the data center. This includes:

  • Complete OS installation with all necessary drivers
  • Latest security updates and patches
  • Initial system configuration and user accounts
  • Basic firewall configuration

Having the OS already installed means you won't need to spend time in the data center doing basic installation tasks.

Pro Tip

Test the OS installation at home or in your office first to ensure everything works correctly. Make sure all hardware drivers are properly installed.

2

Configure IPMI (BMC) Access

IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) or BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) allows you to remotely manage your server even when it's powered off. Configure this before installation:

  • Set a static IP address for the IPMI/BMC interface
  • Configure username and password for remote access
  • Test IPMI access from your location
  • Document the IPMI IP address and credentials securely

With IPMI configured, you can remotely access your server's console, power it on/off, and install or reinstall the OS without being physically present in the data center.

Pro Tip

Use a strong password for IPMI access and store the credentials securely. Consider using a dedicated management network segment for IPMI if your server supports it. Pro tip: Don't forget about terminal login timeouts - passwords that are too long (e.g., 200 characters) can cause issues with terminal sessions.

3

Configure Network Settings

Prepare your network configuration in advance. While you'll receive the actual IP addresses from us, you can prepare:

  • Network interface configuration templates
  • DNS server settings (you'll receive these from us)
  • Static IP configuration scripts (ready to update with your assigned IPs)
  • Routing configuration if needed

Having network templates ready means you can quickly configure the server once it's installed and connected to the network.

Pro Tip

We'll provide you with your assigned IP addresses, gateway, and DNS servers before installation. Have your network configuration scripts ready so you can quickly apply them.

4

Label and Document Your Server

Before shipping or bringing your server to the data center, make sure to:

  • Label your server with a clear identifier (hostname, serial number, or your company name)
  • Document hardware specifications (CPU, RAM, storage)
  • Note any special requirements or configurations
  • Create a checklist of installed software and configurations

Important: Proper labeling is required for shared colocation. If you're unable to label your server yourself, we can provide labeling as a service for €5 per label. We'll print the labels before going on-site. You should ensure proper labeling by adding a paper identifying the server(s) in the shipping box.

Proper labeling helps our team quickly identify and install your server, and documentation ensures you have all the information you need for future reference.

Pro Tip

Use durable labels that won't fall off. Consider including both a hostname and your contact information on the label. If you need labeling assistance, contact us in advance so we can prepare the labels before your server arrives.

5

Test Everything Before Shipping

Perform a final check before shipping or bringing your server to the data center:

  • Boot test: Ensure the server boots correctly with the installed OS
  • IPMI test: Verify remote access works from outside your network
  • Network test: If possible, test network connectivity
  • Hardware test: Run diagnostic tools to check all components

Testing everything in advance helps identify any issues before the server reaches the data center, saving time and avoiding potential delays.

Pro Tip

If you're shipping the server, ensure it's properly packed to prevent damage during transit. Use original packaging if available, or professional server shipping boxes.
