Can my website connect to an external database or server?

Outgoing connections from your webhosting are usually possible. To reach your database from outside, add the IP address as an Access Host.

Usually, yes. Your website can generally connect to an external server or database. Do you want to reach a database on your hosting from outside instead? Then give that IP address access through Access Hosts in DirectAdmin.

From your website to the outside

Outgoing connections are generally possible, for example to an API or an external database.

Does a connection to a specific port fail? Then open a ticket and include:

  • the address of the server you want to connect to;
  • the port;
  • the error message you get.

Support will then check what's going on.

From outside to your database

By default, only your website itself can reach your database. If you want to connect from another computer or server, add that IP address as an access host:

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin via the link in your welcome email, or go to my.planetnode.net, open your webhosting product and click the login button.
  2. Go to MySQL Management and click your database.
  3. Under Access Hosts, add the IP address of the computer or server that needs to connect.
  4. Save.

Then connect with the database user and password of that database, not with your DirectAdmin login.

Note

Only add fixed IP addresses that you know. Every address in the list can try to log in to your database.

Still can't connect? Open a ticket with the IP address you're connecting from and the error message. See also How can I create and manage MySQL databases?
