How do I give support secure access to my server?

How to give support secure access to your server: passwords through a one-time link and SSH access with our public keys.

By Hermie Updated

Never send a password in plain text by email. Ask support for a one-time link, or give us SSH access with our public keys. You remove those again once we're done.

Share a password

  1. Ask for a one-time link in your ticket.
  2. Support sends you that link.
  3. Put the password in through that link. It then isn't in your email or in the ticket.

No passwords in email or tickets

An email stays in several mailboxes and passes through several servers. A password in it should really be considered leaked.

Give SSH access with our keys

Our public SSH keys are at planetnode.net/authorized_keys.

  1. Log in to your server as the user we should log in as.
  2. Make a copy of your current keys, to be safe: cp ~/.ssh/authorized_keys ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.bak
  3. Add our keys: curl -fsSL https://planetnode.net/authorized_keys >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
  4. Put your server's IP address and the user name in your ticket.

These are public keys. Only someone with the matching private key can log in with them, and only we have those.

Revoke access

Once we're done, remove our keys again:

  1. Open ~/.ssh/authorized_keys in an editor, for example with nano ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
  2. Delete the lines you added in step 3.
  3. Save the file.

If you made a copy in step 2, you can also restore it: mv ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.bak ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Check

See which keys have access now with cat ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.

Is it about access to the management interface rather than the operating system? See How do I get access to IPMI on my dedicated server?
