Can I connect my servers through a private VLAN?

How to connect your dedicated servers through an extra VLAN, including to a VPS with an extra network card. You arrange it through support.

By Hermie Updated

Yes. You can connect your servers to each other through an extra VLAN. That works between dedicated servers, and also with a VPS that has an extra network card. You arrange it through support.

What do you use it for?

Traffic between your own servers then goes over its own network, separate from your public IP addresses. For example:

  • a web server talking to a database server
  • backups to another server
  • a cluster of several servers

Request

  1. Open a ticket.
  2. Say which servers and VPSes you want to connect.
  3. Support sets up the VLAN and lets you know when it's ready.

Connecting a VPS

A VPS needs an extra network card to join the VLAN. Mention which VPS it is in your ticket.

How does the VLAN reach my server?

The VLAN arrives tagged on your server's network port; in our network it runs over VXLAN. On your server you create a subinterface for it with the VLAN number support gives you. On Linux, for example, with VLAN 100 on the network card eth0:

bash
ip link add link eth0 name eth0.100 type vlan id 100
ip addr add 10.0.0.1/24 dev eth0.100
ip link set eth0.100 up

Use your own network card, VLAN number and private address. These commands work until the next reboot; then add the subinterface to your network configuration (for example netplan or /etc/network/interfaces) so it stays.

Between data centres

Are your servers in different data centres? See setting up VLANs between data centres.

Check

Is the VLAN ready and have you configured it on your servers? Then test whether the servers reach each other, for example with ping to the other server's address on the VLAN.
