How do I set up reverse DNS (PTR) for my VPS?

How to request reverse DNS (a PTR record) for your VPS's IP address: with a ticket containing the IP address and the hostname.

By Hermie Updated

You currently request reverse DNS (a PTR record) for your VPS from support. Open a ticket with the IP address and the hostname you want.

What do you need it for?

A PTR record links an IP address to a hostname. So it's the reverse of an A or AAAA record. Mail servers in particular look at it. See also Can I send email from my VPS?

Requesting it

  1. Open a ticket.
  2. List the hostname you want for each IP address, for example:
    • 203.0.113.10 becomes mail.yourdomain.com
  3. Support sets the PTR record and lets you know.

Point the hostname to the IP address too

Make sure the hostname itself has an A record (IPv4) or AAAA record (IPv6) pointing to the same IP address. Many mail servers check that both sides match.

Checking

Look up the PTR record with:

  • Linux or macOS: dig -x <ip-address> +short
  • Windows: nslookup <ip-address>

Still seeing the old name? Then it takes a while before the change is visible everywhere. Resolvers can remember the old answer for some time.
