How do I set up VLANs between datacenters?
Private layer-2 connectivity within a rack, between racks and between our datacenters, and how to request it.

With a PlanetNode VLAN you use one network across several racks or even several datacenters. Every VLAN runs on our EVPN-VXLAN overlay, so redundancy is built in.
Three kinds of VLAN connectivity
- VLAN within the same rack (same top-of-rack switch): included.
- VLAN between racks in the same datacenter: paid service.
- VLAN between two datacenters (metro Netherlands): paid service.
A VLAN is a private layer-2 connection at a fixed monthly price with no data cap. It is meant for clustering, storage replication, high availability and disaster recovery.
VLAN within the same rack
A VLAN between your own servers in one rack has no monthly fee; you only pay a one-off setup. We add the VLAN to your existing uplink port; there is no separate link.

VLAN between racks (same datacenter)
A VLAN between two racks in the same datacenter, for example for storage or cluster traffic.

Included: a dedicated VLAN or L2 segment, no data cap, provisioning within the datacenter.
VLAN between datacenters
A VLAN between two of our colocation locations: NorthC Kabelweg and Databarn in Amsterdam, and Greenhouse in Naaldwijk. This is the service for disaster recovery, geo-redundancy and database replication.

Included: redundancy through the EVPN-VXLAN overlay, a dedicated VLAN or L2 segment, no data cap.
On request: an SLA on latency and time to repair, and an EVPN or VPLS hand-off.
Prices
All amounts exclude VAT. The VLAN inside your own rack has no monthly fee because it needs no extra ports or patching; the paid variants cover patching, top-of-rack ports and management.
Requesting a VLAN
- Open a support ticket.
- Include:
- the type: same rack, same datacenter or between datacenters;
- which racks or datacenters you want to connect;
- the VLAN ID you want to use;
- the speed (1, 10 or 40 Gbit/s);
- any extras such as an SLA or an EVPN/VPLS hand-off.
- You receive a configuration proposal with the price and lead time.
- After your go-ahead we deliver the VLAN and you test the connection together with us.
