Troubleshooting Dedicated servers

My dedicated server is unreachable: what can I check myself?

How to check for yourself why your dedicated server is unreachable, and how to report it in a ticket that support can work with.

By Hermie Updated

If your dedicated server is unreachable, first go through the checks below. If you can't find the cause, report it with a ticket and include the results of your checks.

Is the server on?

Check: if you have IPMI, log in to the management interface and see whether the server is on. The console also shows whether the operating system has booted.

Fix: if it's off, power it on through IPMI. If it's hanging, restart it.

Is there an outage?

Check: look at status.planetnode.net for an outage or maintenance.

Fix: if there's a notice, we know about it. Follow the updates on the status page.

Where does the traffic stop?

Check: run an MTR or traceroute from your own connection to your server:

  • Linux or macOS: mtr -rw <ip-address>
  • Windows: tracert <ip-address>

Fix: include the full output in your ticket. It shows us where the traffic stops.

Is a firewall blocking traffic?

Check: did you recently change firewall rules? Log in through the IPMI console and look at the rules, for example with sudo nft list ruleset or sudo ufw status.

Fix: revert the rule that blocks your connection.

Did you get a notification about a null route?

Is there an email from us in your inbox about a null route on your IP address? Then see What happens during a DDoS attack on my dedicated server?

Still not working?

Report it with a ticket. Include:

  • which server and which IP address it's about
  • since when the problem has existed
  • the output of your MTR or traceroute
  • what you've already checked
