Troubleshooting Web hosting

My IP is blocked in DirectAdmin, what now?

Entered the wrong password too often and your IP is blocked in DirectAdmin? Wait 4 to 24 hours or open a ticket to have the block lifted.

By Hermie Updated

Did you enter the wrong password in DirectAdmin a few times, and does the login page no longer load, or do you get a timeout? Then your IP address has probably been blocked temporarily. This protects against people trying to guess passwords. You have two options: wait until the block expires by itself, or open a ticket so we lift the block sooner.

Cause: too many failed login attempts

DirectAdmin keeps track of how often a wrong login comes from an IP address. After a number of failed attempts, that IP address is blocked temporarily. This also happens when it wasn't on purpose, for example because of a typo or an old password your browser fills in automatically.

Another cause we often see: you changed the password of an email account while you were still logged in to webmail. Webmail then keeps trying the old password, and every attempt counts as a failed login. So change the password in Roundcube under Settings, or log out of webmail first. More about this in I can't log in to DirectAdmin or webmail.

Check: open DirectAdmin through another network, for example over 4G/5G on your phone. Does it work there? Then your own IP address is blocked.

Solution 1: wait

The block expires by itself after 4 to 24 hours. After that you can log in again. Don't keep trying in the meantime.

Solution 2: open a ticket

Don't want to wait that long? Then open a ticket at planetno.de/ticket and include:

  • Your IP address, both IPv4 and IPv6.
  • The domain name of your webhosting package.

We'll then lift the block for you.

How to find your own IP address

  1. Make sure you're on the network where you're blocked, so not over 4G.
  2. Open a website that shows your IP address, such as ip.communication.tools. Any "what is my IP" website works.
  3. Write down the IPv4 address (for example 203.0.113.25) and, if you have one, the IPv6 address (for example 2001:db8::25).

Prevent a new block

Not sure about your password? Stop after one or two attempts. Check that your browser or password manager isn't filling in an old password, and update the saved password as soon as you're back in.

Still not working?

Still can't log in after 24 hours, or not through another network either? Then something else is probably going on. Have a look at I can't log in to DirectAdmin or webmail and I cannot reach my website, what now?, or open a ticket at planetno.de/ticket with:

  • Your IPv4 and IPv6 address, which you can find at ip.communication.tools
  • The domain name of your webhosting package
  • What you see when you try to open DirectAdmin (error message or timeout)
  • From which network it does or doesn't work
