Troubleshooting Dedicated servers

My dedicated server has a hardware or disk problem: what now?

How to gather the details of a hardware or disk problem on your dedicated server, and how to report it to support with a ticket.

By Hermie Updated

If you see a hardware or disk problem on your rented dedicated server, report it with a ticket. The hardware is ours, so we fix it. The more you send along, the faster we see what's going on.

What to include

  • the error messages you see, word for word
  • since when you've seen the problem
  • for a disk problem, the SMART output of the disk

Get the SMART output

  1. Install smartmontools if needed, for example with sudo apt install smartmontools.
  2. See which disks there are with lsblk.
  3. For each disk run sudo smartctl -a /dev/<disk>, for example /dev/sda or /dev/nvme0.
  4. Copy the full output into your ticket.

IPMI lets you do more

If you have IPMI access, you can yourself:

  • check the hardware log (SEL). In the web interface, or with ipmitool -I lanplus -H <management-ip> -U <user> sel list. Include the relevant lines.
  • boot a rescue ISO. If your server no longer boots, this still lets you reach your disks.

Make sure you have a backup

If a disk is failing, copy your important data to another place as soon as possible, while you still can.

Report

  1. Open a ticket.
  2. Say which server it's about and add the details from above.
  3. Support contacts you about the next steps.
